Brower takes the long way home for Valley

ALEXANDRIA — Juniata Valley’s defense did its job and two long touchdowns from Gabe Brower sent the Hornets to a 20-6 win over Everett at A.R. Simkins Field on Senior Night Friday.

Juniata Valley overcame penalties in the first quarter and forced Everett into a one-dimensional offense by shutting down the running game.

The Hornets also remembered assistant coach Jim Bob Johnson, who passed away earlier this year, with a moment of silence prior to kickoff.

Play of the game: Holding a 13-6 lead, Brower worked to the outside and went down the sideline 76 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

Player of the game: Brower, a slotback, caught a 50-yard touchdown pass and ran 76 yards for another score.

Unsung heroes: Hornets fullback Ryann Betres picked up the hard yards inside, gaining 59, and quarterback Caden Rupert ran the offense well in his first start, throwing for 114 yards and a touchdown.

Most vital statistic: Everett was held to minus-six yards rushing.

Juniata Valley coach Bill Musser: “Caden did a very nice job staying within himself and not trying to do too much. We need to make sure we stay longer on our assignments and be a little more patient. Everett had a nice six-man front and mixing it up on defense. We popped one play and that helped us out for sure. I’m really happy the way the defense stepped up and plugged holes.”

Everett coach Dave Lightner: “I’m very proud of my guys for the way they fought. They didn’t roll over. We’re a young group and have a lot of injuries. Malex Akers has a great future. He’s still learning but his leadership is coming through and he made some nice plays.”

Juniata Valley quarterback Caden Rupert: “I was feeling some pressure but the line gave me enough time to get the ball out. My receivers are catching it 90 percent of the time. It’s a relief to get the win and we’re going to work to improve every week.”

Notable: Brower rushed for 100 yards on seven carries. … Akers went 11 of 23 for 190 yards for the Warriors and Brandon Mills made three catches for 114 yards. … Hunter Browning scored Everett’s touchdown.

Records: Everett (0-1), Juniata Valley (1-0)

Next week: Juniata Valley heads to Mount Union. Everett hosts Tussey Mountain.
