Penns Valley pounds Mounties

PHILIPSBURG — Penns Valley throttled Philipsburg-Osceola 56-7 Friday night to complete its first winning season (7-3) since 2007. With the win Penns Valley locked up a berth in the District 6 Class 2A playoffs next week.

“This is wonderful for the kids, the school, the community,” Penns Valley coach Martin Tobias said. “I’m very, very proud of these kids. They’ve worked really, really hard. At the beginning of the year our goal was to be competitive, to go out and compete in every game. Tonight we were able to get some turnovers which gave us good field position.”

The Rams also showed off an offense which came within 8 yards (218 passing, 210 rushing) of being perfectly balanced as Aaron Tobias hit on 14-of-19 passes and Ryan Ripka ran for 148 yards.

Penns Valley struck for four touchdowns in the first quarter.

After holding the Mounties on downs to start the game, Penns Valley got the ball on the P-O 35 and needed only three plays to score as Tobias hooked up with Cole Breon from 11 yards out and Gage Ripka booted the PAT with 9:52 showing on the clock.

Ripka picked off Bubba Slogosky on P-Os next possession and returned the ball to the Mountie 32. Four plays later Tobias hit Logan Snyder for a four-yard score and Ripka made it 14-0 at the 8:37 mark.

After forcing P-O to punt on its next possession the Rams only needed two plays to score as Tobias and Snyder teamed up for a 63-yard score at the 5:36 mark, giving the Rams three touchdowns in nine plays.

Penns Valley only needed three plays to get its next touchdown and Ripka scored from the 7.

In the second quarter Tobias connected with Seth Baney from a yard out just 44 seconds gone.

Leading 35-0, Penns Valley gave up a TD when Slogosky scored from the one with 2:58 left in the half. Aaron Parks kicked the pAT.

But the Rams weren’t done scoring in the half as Ryan Ripka got loose for a 48-yard score with 2:19 showing on the clock. Gage Ripka made it 42-7 at the break.

In the third quarter Tobias found Breon for a 63-yard score and in the final period Christian Fruhauf scored from the P-O 10 to end the scoring.

“They were sharp,” said Philipsburg-Osceola coach Brian McGonigal. “We didn’t have an answer for them. They blocked well and we didn’t get off blocks. But I thought our offensive line had one of its best games of the year. At times we ran the ball well and we pass protected but we had 11 dropped passes.”

One sad note for the Mounties was the loss of senior Landon McDonald to a shoulder injury which ended his career four tackles short of Jon Condo’s record.
