Panthers roll

LOYSBURG — Garry Black was smiling once again.

The Northern Bedford football coach had good reason to be smiling.

“It feels good to win once again,” said a smiling Black after Northern Bedford pounded Williamsburg, 40-8, on homecoming Friday night in an Inter-County Conference game at Panther Community Stadium. “These guys have been working really hard and deserve to win a game.”

The Black Panthers improved to 2-4 in the ICC, and 2-5 overall, but Black believes the record is deceiving.

“With the exception of Central, which is a 3A team, we were in every game,” Black said. “It was one play here, one play there that cost us. I believe were are one of the best 2-5 teams in the state.”

Williamsburg coach Bob Hearn was impressed with the Panthers, too.

“Their record is deceiving because they are a good team,” Hearn said. “Their backs are quick and we had trouble stopping them.”

The Panthers took control early, scoring on their second possession, and built a 27-0 lead by halftime. Five different players scored for Northern.

Sophomore quarterback Thad Leidy threw three touchdown passes, hitting Colby Imler, Kyler States and Case Donaldsdon with scoring strikes. States and Kyle Guyer added TD runs.

Guyer, a 6-foot, 240-pound lineman, opened the scoring for the Panthers, barreling into the end zone from 6 yards out at the 6:55 mark of the first quarter. States tacked on his first of four PATs.

“Kyle is a senior and one of our leaders and we wanted to give him the opportunity to score a touchdown,” Black explained. “We have been working on that play all week and I am really happy that Kyle was able to score a touchdown.”

Leidy completed 13 of 18 passes for 173 yards. Donaldson grabbed four passes for 123 yards.

Leidy connected with Donaldson on a 54-yard TD pass on Northern’s first possession of the second half. States, who hauled in a 1-yard TD pass from Leidy with four seconds remaining in the first half, dashed 73 yards for a touchdown with 4:50 left in the third quarter to hike Northern’s lead to 40-0 and institute the mercy rule.

“Last week against Bellwood was the start of our new season and we are now 1-1 in our new season,” Black noted. “Our goal is to win our last four games.”

Williamsburg, which is winless through seven games, avoided a shutout when Jay Clark scored from two yards out with 4:47 left in the game. Ty Clark passed to Wes McCall for the two-point conversion.

“We gave them good field position in the first half and they took advantage of it,” Hearn said. “In the second half we played better and were able to move the ball.”

Game notes: Players and coaches from Northern’s 1983 team that won ICC and Mid-Penn conference titles were recognized at halftime … Williamsburg’s Nick Ward recovered a fumble while Caymen Hughes had an interception … Northern’s Kainen Brown recovered a fumble … Madison Cottle was crowned homecoming queen in ceremonies prior to the game; Alex Fouse was selected king.
