Tigers pull away from DuBois

DuBOIS — It took a little while for the Hollidaysburg Area football team to get going on Friday evening, but once it got to the second half, there wasn’t any slowing the Tigers down.

Hollidaysburg running back Patrick Young and quarterback Brady Walters both ran for more than 100 yards on a night that the Tigers rushed for more than 300 yards as a team in a 34-7 victory over DuBois at E.J. Mansell Stadium.

The Tigers also held a high-powered Beaver offense to just 201 yards of total offense, including just 20 yards on the ground.

“Defensively our guys did a great job,” Hollidaysburg coach Homer DeLattre said. “That’s a great offense over there that they were able to shut down and give us numerous chances on offense.”

“Credit to (Hollidaysburg) and Coach DeLattre,” DuBois coach Justin Marshall said. “They’re a solid team. We knew it was going to take a great effort tonight to pull out a win, but I’m very proud of the kids. The way they responded, the way they hung in. We told them they needed their ‘A’ game, and they brought it. A couple of plays broke late in the game and they started to grind, but we stuck with it. I’m real proud of them.”

Hollidaysburg went to halftime up 14-7 on the Beavers, but didn’t really find its groove on offense until late in the game.

The Tigers grinded out a 10-play, 55-yard drive in the middle of the second quarter that ended with a Walters 5-yard touchdown run, but again had a quick three-and-out punt on their next possession.

DuBois also got a turnover on the next Hollidaysburg possession as Beaver defensive lineman Jordan Frano batted the ball and came up with an interception.

The Beaver offense got the ball all the way down to fourth-and-6 from the Hollidaysburg 7 as quarterback Matt Miller hit Lucas Hopson over the middle. Hopson was stopped just a half-yard short of the first down.

Hollidaysburg responded with a 99-yard drive that needed 10 plays as Walters broke a 63-yard run for a touchdown on a keeper to give Hollidaysburg a 27-7 lead.

“We didn’t get any kind of rhythm offensively until the second half when we had a 99-yard drive. That was key. They could’ve went down only a touchdown, and we ended up going up three touchdowns. That was a huge drive and good reaction by our guys.”

Danny Molliver capped the scoring with a dive from two yards out with 2:15 remaining in the game to set the final at 34-7.

Early in the first quarter, Young broke a pair of tackles on his way to a 29-yard touchdown run, while Walters hit Jack Sauserman from 33 yards with 10:11 to play in the first half, giving Hollidaysburg a 14-0 lead.

DuBois scored their only touchdown with 44 seconds left in the half as Miller found Kenny Garvey in the back of the end zone as Garvey dragged his toe inside the line for a 14-yard touchdown.

DuBois finished the season at 3-7 and will not appear in the District 5-6-9 Class AAAA playoffs.

“We didn’t have the record we hoped we would this year, but it was a tough transition for the kids and for the coaches,” said Marshall of his first year on the job at DuBois. “We came a long way, and those seniors left a lasting impression on the underclassmen that we can carry some of the momentum into next year and kind of follow their lead.”

The Tigers finished the regular season at 7-3 and will await an opponent to be determined in the playoffs. They could possibly wait for as much as 20 days until they hit the field again.

“We were in the same situation last year, so we’ll go to the drawing board and make sure we try to plan out what we’re doing and play the District 10 champion (in three weeks) if that’s the case.”

Hollidaysburg would play Brashear on Nov. 10 or 11 if Brashear wins the District 8 title against Allderdice next Saturday.
