Golden Eagles have no problems on road
SPRING MILLS – Tyrone quarterback Garrett Hunter floated the ball in the corner of the Penns Valley end zone and right into the hands of Duane Boone for a touchdown.
So, just like that, 1:47 into the game, the Golden Eagles were on the board.
“When I dropped back, I saw that he slipped,” Hunter said. “I was thinking about not throwing it, but I figured I’d just put it in the back of the end zone and let him make a play. He just made an amazing catch.”
Hunter later added a 50-yard touchdown pass to Nick Getz on a slant pattern in a 21-point first quarter, and the rout was on. Hunter threw for 151 yards on 10-of-16 passing, and Getz hauled in five passes for 106 yards in the Eagles’ 41-7 romp on PV’s senior night.
“We’ve been working a lot in practice,” Hunter said. “The line is blocking, and the receivers are running great routes. When you really don’t have anybody rushing at you and the receivers are getting open, it is pretty easy sometimes. It’s not all me, though.”
“The receivers are getting open for him, and he’s putting the ball on the money,” Tyrone coach Jason Wilson said. “I think the biggest thing is the receivers are making plays after the catch.”
“I thought our kids played with a lot of intensity, and I thought they played with a lot of inspiration and motivation,” PV coach Martin Tobias said, “but we ran into a really good football team. And it was evident who was better.”
Aleic Hunter ran for 117 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns, and the Eagles’ first-team defense smothered the Rams. PV (2-7), without quarterback Ben Alexander, who had a cast on his left hand, finished with 45 yards passing from backup Andrew Tobias and 28 rushing yards.
It wasn’t all roses for 8-1 Eagles, who weren’t as crisp on offense the rest of the way as they were in the first quarter.
“We started out really good,” Wilson said. “We put 21 points on in the first quarter, but then there was a little bit of a letdown in the second quarter, and we only scored seven. I don’t know if it’s the trip down to Penns Valley or whatever, but every time we come down here, we play a little lousy at times.”
After the TD pass to Boone – a tight end starting again at fullback for injured Eli Sleeth – and a PV punt, the teams traded fumbles. Boone caused Tobias to fumble, and Cameron Bakhsheshe recovered at the PV 19. On third down from the 20, Bakhsheshe was rewarded with an end around carry, which he took into the end zone.
On and third down from the 50 in the first quarter, Garrett Hunter zipped a perfect pass to Getz coming across the middle, and he easily took it the rest of the way for a score.
“It’s great to have somebody that can not only catch the ball but get a lot of yards after a play,” Garrett Hunter said. “He’s just a real playmaker.”
Tyrone’s last score of the first came on a 13-play, 64-yard drive that ended Aleic Hunter scoring on a 10-yard run with 1:20 left in the first half, making the score 28-0.
A Silas Crawford 19-yard punt return to the PV 43 in the third quarter gave the Eagles a short field. They used Garrett Hunter’s only second-half pass and nine running plays to cover that distance, including Aleic Hunter’s 14-yard TD run. Ethan Vipond’s PAT put the mercy rule into effect – the sixth time the Eagles have done that.
“It was a mercy rule, but, unlike the other ones, it took until the third quarter until we got to it,” said Wilson, whose team plays at 8-1 Chestnut Ridge next week. “They played us tough in the second and third quarter.”
Notes: Wilson was tight-lipped about a lower leg injury to defensive back Cullen Raftery. … Tyrone’s Gary Weaver scored on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter. … Tyrone had 360 total yards.
