CLAYSBURG — In his 15-year high school basketball coaching career, first at Tyrone and now at Claysburg-Kimmel, Mike Harris has had the pleasure of watching four of his players reach the 1,000-point mark for their careers.

Bulldogs’ junior Brayden Haney became the latest Tuesday night, and he’s also the youngest of the four to have reached the milestone.

Haney scored a game-high 20 points, and reached the 1,000-point plateau with a driving layup midway through the fourth quarter, then surpassed it with a jumper later in the period, leading Claysburg to a 44-41 Inter-County Conference victory over Northern Bedford on Sideline Cancer Night at the Claysburg-Kimmel High School gymnasium.

“It’s great to see that — I’ve been very fortunate,” Harris said of watching Haney’s milestone performance. “He’s my fourth 1,000-point scorer, two at Tyrone and two at Claysburg. He’s put in a lot of hard work in the gym to get better and better, and this is his reward.”

Haney had only six points at halftime, but scored 10 of his 20 in the fourth quarter to help Claysburg (3-8 overall, 1-2 in the conference) hold off a Northern Bedford surge.

Haney used a neat move to the basket to score the milestone layup with 4:22 left in the third quarter, giving Claysburg a 39-32 lead at the time.

“It was a little stressful, I’m glad I got it, and I’m glad that I was able to do it with this team,” Haney said of reaching the 1,000-point mark. “Everybody came together for us in this game tonight.”

Haney entered the game needing 18 points to reach 1,000. Claysburg, which also got a double-figure effort from freshman Blake Kulick (11 points), led by just four points, 15-11 at halftime, before using a 12-3 run in the third quarter to build a 27-14 lead.

Claysburg led, 29-19 after three quarters but Northern Bedford battled back in the fourth quarter, which the Black Panthers carried, 22-15.

Northern Bedford, which got 16 points and a team-high 13 rebounds from senior Wesley Horsh, and 10 points from junior Nate Eckenroad, got consecutive 3-balls from Eckenroad and senior Kaden Norwood to pull to within two points, 43-41, with four seconds left in the game.

Kulick hit one of two free throws for Claysburg to give the Bulldogs a 44-41 lead, and a desperation 45-foot shot by Northern Bedford in an effort to tie the game went wide as Claysburg –which got a game-high 15 rebounds from junior Cory Walter — held on.

“Claysburg definitely held us in check defensively, but credit to our guys for battling back,” said Northern Bedford coach A.J. Weyant, whose team dropped to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in the conference. “Congratulations to Brayden Haney on reaching 1,000 points. He’s one of the best ballplayers in this area.”
