BG tops Carroll in Building II final

Tuesday night’s Building II High School Boys Junior Varsity Summer Championship provided a great look at the future of both Bishop Carroll Catholic and Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic.

During what turned out to be a defensive affair for much of the night, it was the Marauders getting the best of their diocesan rivals in a 46-42 win over the Huskies.

“You never get a consistent group from night to night,” Marauder assistant coach John Craig said. “The whole idea of the summer is growing from beginning to end.

“It’s expected you’re going to have ups and downs, and we certainly did. It felt pretty good to get a win against a good team, and a well-coached team.”

After trading scoreless possessions early, the Huskies got plenty of scoring from Spencer Myers, who scored 10 of his team-high 14 points in the opening stanza.

BG, though, had an answer in the form of Kurt Ruggery who nailed a pair of 3s as he scored eight of his game-high 17 points as the Marauders took a 23-21 lead into the break.

Bishop Guilfoyle’s offensive consistency continued into the second half as Ruggery drained a pair of 3-pointers to help the Marauders pull away late by almost 10 points.

Bishop Carroll coach Cosie Aliquo believes his youth getting this experience will go a long way in deciding Bishop Carroll’s chances for a successful winter.

“Our younger guys getting better, because we’re going to need them,” Aliquo said. “We played five freshmen at the end going against their sophomores and juniors. They had a couple of freshmen in there, so it only helps us.”

While the summer phase of the preparation may be over, both teams are now shifting their focus to the fall.

Whether or not the Huskies made progress point in this year, Aliquo says that will be known come February.

“You don’t get better in December and January,” Aliquo said. “You get better now. It’s when you improve the most. We’ll find out if we improved.”

Craig is looking forward to the fall even as some of his squad will now prepare begin preparing for the upcoming football season.

“The arrows pointing up is the best way you can put it. We hit our fall schedule, and some more kids are going to play in spots where they weren’t. It’s going to be a busy fall.”
