Lady Marauders cruise past Central Cambria

Regardless of the sport, there’s no substitute for speed and quickness.

Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic’s Aurielle Brunner used her speed and quickness Wednesday night to help the Lady Marauders roll over Central Cambria, 59-37, in a Laurel Highlands Conference contest at the Pleasant Valley gym.

“When she pressures the ball the way she does, it’s hard on anyone,” BG coach Kristi Kaack said.

“I thought she did a phenomenal job on the defensive end and that creates her offense.

“We always tell her to focus on the defensive end and the offense will take care of itself.”

Brunner, a 5-foot-8 junior, came off the bench in the second quarter to provide a spark that turned a close game into a rout in BG’s favor.

The Lady Marauders, who led 11-9 after one quarter, scored the first 9 points of the second quarter, forcing CC coach Brittany Sedlock to use a timeout. CC’s Liz Bopp scored the next 4 points, but BG, led by Brunner, ran off the next 11 and that pretty much was it.

Brunner scored on a steal, then teamed with Leah Homan on a fastbreak. Another steal and bucket by Brunner made it 26-13 and that was followed by a Teresa Haigh deuce and Homan fielder that ballooned the BG advantage to 31-13.

“Me and Aurielle have pretty good chemistry,” Homan said. “She’s so fast … I know I’m getting the ball to her because she beats everybody down the floor.”

“We work together well,” Brunner said of Homan. “We have seven or eight players who contribute — a lot of talent — and if we work together, which so far we have, we can be good.”

Homan, a junior, led BG with 17 points, followed by Blaise Kilmartin (12) and Haigh (11). Brunner (8) got all of hers in the second quarter.

“The thing about this team is you can’t focus on one or two kids because we have five capable of putting the ball in the basket,” Kaack said.

“The girls are working hard and doing a nice job,” Kaack noted. “It makes my job easier and they’re a fun group, for sure.”

The Marauders outscored the Lady Red Devils 24-22 in the second half for their third straight win. CC fell to 3-2.

“BG is a very good team and we knew that coming in here,” Sedlock said. “They have a very good starting five … probably starting seven.

“I thought my girls did a nice job responding to their runs, other than that big run they had in the second quarter,” Sedlock offered. “We kept our heads and battled to the end, so I’m proud of my girls for not giving in. It’s very easy to hang your heads when a big run like that happens, but we kept battling and saw some good things in the second half.”

Bopp led CC with 14 points.

“Our offense struggled so credit to BG for playing good man defense,” Sedlock noted, “but we couldn’t hit anything even if we were wide open.”

BG visits Forest Hills on Friday for a boys-girls doubleheader while Central Cambria girls host Somerset.
