Shaw reaches milestone in Lady Eagles’ win

TYRONE — Three years ago, as a freshman, Sydney Shaw got a start in the district playoffs for the Tyrone Area High School girls basketball program and gained some confidence that she could make an offensive impact with the team.

Just how big an impact was manifested Wednesday night, when Shaw, a 5-foot-8 senior forward, surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career while scoring a game-high 22 in Tyrone’s 55-39 Mountain League victory over Central at the Tyrone Area Middle School gymnasium.

“I had started a playoff game in my freshman year, and after that, I thought I could start varsity and score a lot of points,” Shaw said.

Shaw reached the 1,000-point mark early in Wednesday’s game, scoring Tyrone’s first five points, including a baseline jumper with 4:02 left in the first quarter that gave her the milestone.

The game was then stopped so she could accept congratulatory hugs from her teammates, including her sister, Shannon, a sophomore guard on the Lady Eagles.

“It means a lot to me,” Sydney Shaw said of reaching the 1,000-point plateau. “I’m one of the select few people to be able to do that in my career, and it’s special to me that I got to do it on a team with my sister and my best friends.

“It’s a really great achievement, and I’m proud of my teammates for supporting me and believing in me,” Shaw said.

Tyrone coach Luke Rhoades said that Shaw has assumed a leadership role on the team as well as being its top scorer.

“She’s a hard worker, a good shooter and a real nice teammate,” Rhoades said. “She’s a motherly figure to some of the younger players on the team. It’s not about her at all — she’s about the team. For her to get (to 1,000 points), has been due to a lot of hard work. She has hit some big shots for us.”

Shaw, who scored four 3-pointers, possesses a nice outside shooting touch.

“She has a terrific shot that she has obviously worked hard at,” Central coach Rob Mock said of Shaw. “She can get her shot off very fast, which makes her very effective.”

Tyrone, which improved to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the Mountain League, built a 13-6 lead after one quarter and used freshman forward Jaida Parker’s big second quarter to expand the advantage to 28-14 at intermission.

Parker scored nine of her 14 points in the second quarter as Tyrone took control.

Her 3-point shot from the top of the circle gave Tyrone a 19-10 lead, and she took a feed from freshman guard Stephanie Ramsey and scored a driving field goal to put the Lady Eagles ahead, 21-10.

Another driving hoop by Parker made it a 23-10 game, and Parker finished her flurry with a field goal from the paint off an assist from Sydney Shaw to give Tyrone a 25-12 lead.

Shaw’s 3-point field goal from the top of the circle staked Tyrone to the 28-14 halftime advantage.

“Jaida is a tough player,” Rhoades said of Parker, who also grabbed a team-high six rebounds for Tyrone. “She’s been out the last two games with an injury, and it’s good to have her back. She looked healthy and fresh, and she sparked us tonight.”

Central (5-8 overall, 3-4 league) has been playing through some adversity. The Lady Dragons lost junior center Erin Brumbaugh to a torn ACL this past August, and junior point guard Jenna Mock has been out the last two weeks with a concussion.

“I’m not unhappy with our effort — the kids played their hearts out — but we’re struggling right now with handling the basketball and being able to run our offense,” Rob Mock said. “We weren’t able to run a whole lot of offense tonight, and you have to give Tyrone credit for that. They forced us out of our offense.”

Central, which fell behind 43-23 after three quarters, was led by junior Kylie Metzger’s 13 points. Senior Maddi Metzler grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for Central, which had a 23-21 edge in rebounds.

Despite the win, Rhoades still felt that his team had left some unfinished business on the table.

“I just don’t think we were as focused as we needed to be,” Rhoades said. “The last couple of days in practice, I was taking it easy on (the players), so that’s my fault.”
