Lions lack defense in loss to Purdue

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State women’s basketball team came out on the short end of a nail-biter Sunday afternoon in PSU’s Big Ten opener at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Sophomore Makenna Marisa led five Lady Lions in double figures with a career-best 26 points, which bested her previous high of 17 points. She is now averaging 14.4 ppg on the season.

Penn State took its first lead of the game, 66-65, with 51 seconds left in the third quarter following back-to-back layups from Shay Hagans. PSU ended the quarter with a one-point advantage, 68-67, thanks to two free throws by Camden with one second left.

Purdue used a 15-3 run midway through the fourth quarter to pull away after a back-and-forth start to the term. Penn State went up 72-67 following a Marisa jumper with 8:37 to play before the Boilermakers started their run with a free throw by Kayana Traylor at the 7:50 mark and capped it with a three-pointer by Cassidy Hardin to go up 82-75 with 3:13 left on the clock.

Penn State would get as close as two, 89-87, with eight seconds left in the game, but Traylor hit a pair of free throws at the other end to put the game away.

Penn State coach Carolyn Kieger was disappointed with the Lady Lions’ defensive performance.

“We’ve been focusing on (defense) all offseason, since the moment we got into workouts with this new team,” Kieger said. “I have to go back to the drawing board and we have to get better there.”

“We have to stop people from getting in the paint.”
