PSU ice hockey team settles for 3-3 tie

UNIVERSITY PARK — A late goal by Notre Dame helped the Fighting Irish to a 3-3 overtime tie with the Penn State ice hockey team Friday night in Big Ten Conference action at the Pegula Ice Arena.
The No. 8 Nittany Lions move to 17-8-2 and 9-6-2 in the league while Notre Dame is now 11-11-5 and 6-7-4 in the conference.
Down 1-0 to the Irish on a Mike O’Leary goal in the first period, Penn State got its equalizer from Nikita Pavlychev, thanks to a turnover in the neutral zone.
Penn State went up 2-1 in the second period o a Sam Sternschein score. Notre Dame, again, came back to tie it, this time when Matt Hellickson scored off a missed shot by Cal Burke.l
Penn State took a 3-2 lead early in the third period on freshman Tyler Gratton’s goal. Michael Graham tied it up for the Irish with just 1:49 to play in the game.
Both teams play again tonight with the puck dropping at 6 p.m.
