Lady Lions are unable to erase early deficit

From Mirror reports

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State women’s basketball team trimmed a 19-point deficit down to four late in the fourth quarter, but Rider used strong free throw shooting down the stretch to hold on for a 78-70 win Sunday afternoon at the Bryce Jordan Center.

“I want to give my props to Rider. They absolutely deserve that win,” Lady Lions coach Carolyn Kieger said. “They out-played us, they out-hearted us, they out-hustled us. They absolutely had more juice than us and that’s on me as a coach to fix. But I’m very disappointed in our energy and our efforts.”

Senior Siyeh Frazier and junior Kamaria McDaniel led the Lady Lions with 15 points apiece. Freshman Makenna Marisa followed with 13 points, while sophomore Lauren Ebo rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points. Junior Alisia Smith put together a strong game with eight points and a team-best 12 rebounds.

The Lady Lions, who trailed 35-28 at the break, didn’t make their move until the final frame.

Six different Lady Lions scored during a 16-3 Penn State run that saw PSU go 6-for-12 from the field and force four Rider turnovers to pull all the way back within four at 60-56 with 4:07 to play.

Rider answered with three timely baskets to score six of the next seven points and reclaim a nine-point lead at 66-57 with 1:32 left on the clock.

Penn State kept fighting as the Lady Lions used timely baskets and free throw shooting to keep themselves in the game, but Rider went 12-for-12 from the charity stripe in the final three minutes to seal the 78-70 victory.

Rider (1-1) was led by Stella Johnson’s 25 points.
