PSU-Indiana scoring summary

FIRST QUARTER

Penn State 7, Indiana 0: KJ Hamler returned the opening kickoff 58 yards to the Indiana 36. Two plays later, Trace McSorley hit Miles Sanders out of the backfield for a 29-yard gain to the 6. Sanders scored on third-and-goal from the 1 with 13:00 left in the first.

Penn State Indiana 7: The Hoosiers answered on their first possession, going 75 yards for a TD. Peyton Ramsey hit a couple big passes (12 and 17 yards), and a reverse to Whop Philyor went for 26 yards to the PSU 5. Stevie Scott ran it in on the next play with 10:18 to go in the first.

Indiana 14, Penn State 7: The Hoosiers stopped punter Blake Gillikin on a fake punt from the Indiana 48 and took over at the PSU 42. From the 30, Scott ran up the gut to the end zone with 1:06 to go in the first.

SECOND QUARTER

Penn State 14, Indiana 14: McSorley took off for a 44-yard run to the Indiana 23. Backup QB/lion Tommy Stevens was in on that play but was a decoy. Stevens caught a pass for no gain on the next play, then he lined up at QB on the next play. He took the snap, faked like he was going to run straight ahead, then threw to wide-open tight end Pat Freiermuth for a 23-yard TD with 10:08 left in the half.

Penn State 17, Indiana 14: McSorley hit Juwan Johnson on a shallow cross on third-and-8 from the PSU 28, and Johnson scampered for 59 yards to the Hoosier 13. The Lions stalled inside the 10 and, and Jake Pinegar kicked a 27-yard field goal with 6:27 to go in the half.

THIRD QUARTER

Penn State 20, Indiana 14: The Lions forced a fumble as Indiana was driving to start the second half and took over at their own 25. McSorley started the drive with a 22-yard pass to Cam Sullivan-Brown, and PSU kept moving the chains to get to the Hoosier 16. Brandon Polk dropped one pass on the drive, and on third-and-8 from the 14, he had another ball go through his hands that would have been a touchdown. KJ Hamler caught the tipped pass but was barely out of bounds. Pinegar then kicked a 32-yard field goal with 7:16 left in the third.

Indiana 21, Penn State 20: The Hoosiers drove 81 yards in nine plays to grab the lead, getting help from a couple of big penalties on PSU. There was a targeting call for 15 yards that led to the ejection of safety Garrett Taylor, and a hands to the face penalty by tackle Robert Windsor later added 15 more yards. Ramsey had a 16-yard run to the 13, and Indiana converted a third-and-6 from the 9 to get to the 3. Scott scored from 3 yards on the next play with 4:01 to go in the third.

Penn State 26, Indiana 21: Johnathan Thomas returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards before stepping out of bounds at the Indiana 5. McSorley took it in himself on the next play with 3:41 left in the third, but Jake Pineger’s PAT try was blocked by Brandon Wilson.

FOURTH QUARTER

Penn State 33, Indiana 21: Jonathan Sutherland forced a fumble on a punt by Indiana’s J-Shun Harris, and Nick Scott recovered at the Hoosiers’ 32. PSU needed five plays to cover the distance, mostly on the ground, and McSorley ran it in from 4 yards with 10:25 remaining.

Penn State 33, Indiana 28: The Hoosiers stayed alive in the waning minutes, going 85 yards in 15 plays and converting two fourth downs. They converted on fourth-and-5 from their own 20 to stay in it, and on fourth-and-12 from the PSU 21, Ramsey connected with Harris in the end zone with 49 seconds to go. Indiana recovered the onside kick and got to the PSU 44 but ran out of time.
