2025 Orange Bowl highlights, lowlights

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Following are the highlights and lowlights from Penn State’s 27-24 loss to Notre Dame in a College Football Playoff semifinal/Orange Bowl game on Thursday night at Hard Rock Stadium:

Play of the game: With 37 seconds left, Drew Allar was intercepted on a pass over the middle by Notre Dame’s Christian Gray at the Penn State 42. That set up the game-winning field goal with 10 seconds remaining.

Offensive player of the game: Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard completed 15-of-23 for 223 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 18 times for 35 yards and another score.

Defensive player of the game: Penn State safety Zakee Wheatley made 16 tackles, including nine solo. He also intercepted a pass and was credited with one sack.

Most telling statistic: The Lions passed for just 135 yards.

Most deceiving statistic: State tailbacks averaged 5.0 yards on 34 carries.

Hidden statistic: PSU converted just 3-of-11 third downs.

Best run: Jeremiyah Love broke three tackles on a 2-yard touchdown run that pushed the Irish up 17-10 with 14:07 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Best pass: Leonard threaded a 36-yard strike to Aneyas Williams in the third quarter.

Worst pass: Allar underthrew an open Singleton at the goal line on the first play of the second quarter, forcing the Lions to settle for a field goal and a 3-0 lead.

Best catch: Dani Dennis-Sutton floated back into coverage and made a leaping interception in the fourth quarter, which set up the Lions’ go-ahead touchdown.

Catch it, will ya: Though underthrown, Singleton had his hands on Allar’s pass at the goal line and should have caught it.

Worst decision: Zion Tracy made a fair catch at the PSU 2 in the first quarter, pinning the Lions deep.

Best block: Kaytron Allen sealed a fourth-down block that Singleton converted into a first down to the ND 29 on the Lions’ first scoring drive.

Best tackle: Bryce Young and Drayk Bowen stopped Allar on third-and-3 with 3:09 left, forcing a punt with the score tied 24-24.

Best hit: Dennis-Sutton decked ND backup QB Steve Angeli with a blindside hit in the second quarter.

Best kick: Mitch Jeter’s 41-yard field goal won the game with 10 seconds left. He also closed the first half with a 41-yarder to pull the Irish within 10-3.

Best call: On third-and-1 from the PSU 34, the Irish sprung tight end Jayden Thomas for an 18-yard run to the Lions’ 16. It was Thomas’ first carry of the game and helped set up their 17-10 lead.

Worst penalties: Both teams were called for interference in the end zone, which led to touchdowns.

Worst call: With the way Allar was playing, something much safer than what became the fateful interception should have been called.

Blown coverage: Cam Miller fell and Jaylen Reed couldn’t recover on Leonard’s 54-yard touchdown to Jaden Greathouse that tied the game at 24 with 4:38 left.

Best effort: Notre Dame’s offensive line.

Unsung hero: Angeli came in after Leonard’s injury and completed 6-of-7 for 44 yards on ND’s first scoring drive.

Best moment/worst moment: New Orange Bowl Hall of Fame member Urban Meyer’s pre-game introduction was roundly booed.
