Backup QB enters transfer portal

From Mirror reports

Will Levis, Penn State’s backup quarterback in 2020, has entered the transfer portal.

Levis confirmed his intentions Thursday night on Twitter.

He is a graduate transfer, having recently graduated with a business degree in three years and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Because of the coronavirus, the 2020 season did not count against players’ eligibility.

Levis thanked James Franklin and the coaching staff and said he’s “extremely grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a historic program.”

The Connecticut product started one game this season but played in eight and 14 in the past two years.

He was used primarily as a runner, carrying 82 times for 260 yards and three touchdowns while completing 33-of-55 passes for 421 yards mainly as Sean Clifford’s backup.

Levis’ top game came at Nebraska when he completed 14 of 31 passes for 219 yards and rushed 18 times for 64 yards to spark a comeback that fell short after relieving Clifford.

Levis started the next week against Iowa and completed 13 of 16 for 106 but was replaced by Clifford, who went on to start the final four games of the season.

Franklin fired quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca after one season and replaced him with Mike Yurcich, who spent last season at Texas.

Levis is the second quarterback to depart since the season ended as true freshman Micah Bowens transferred to Oklahoma.

The scholarship QBs remaining on the roster include Clifford, projected backup Ta’Quan Roberson and incoming freshman Christian Veilleux of Canada.

Penn State also has a commitment for 2022 from Central York’s Beau Pribula.

Franklin said two weeks ago that he wouldn’t rule out taking a graduate transfer quarterback if the right option presented itself.
