PSU defensive tackles enter transfer portal

UNIVERSITY PARK — James Franklin said last week that Penn State would be an active participant in the transfer portal, and he wasn’t kidding.

The Nittany Lions lost two defensive tackles Wednesday with news that Antonio Shelton and Judge Culpepper had entered the transfer portal.

Shelton, a senior starter, confirmed on Twitter that he’ll seek a graduate transfer. He had 14 tackles in nine games, including 4.5 for loss.

Culpepper appeared in all nine games as a reserve and made five tackles.

Fifth-year defensive end Shane Simmons also announced on Twitter that he’s bypassing a final year of eligibility.

Because of the coronavirus, the 2020 season did not count against a player’s eligibility.

On Monday, the Lions picked up a commitment from running back John Lovett, a graduate transfer who spent the past four years at Baylor and rushed for 1,803 yards, 17 touchdowns and a per-carry average of 5.1 yards.
