Neil Rudel’s take: Penn State climbed as high as No. 2 in the polls but similar to the Rose Bowl, the Nits couldn’t hold a two-score lead at Ohio State and fell, 39-38. The loss lingered, a pattern under James Franklin, who coaches so much on emotion, and PSU lost the following week at Michigan State after enduring a strange three-hour lightning delay. The Lions got back on their game to finish a second-straight 11-win season with a win over Washington in the Fiesta Bowl. Career records fell as Trace McSorley became the all-time leader in touchdowns responsible for (65, he would end up with 100 after 2018) and Saquon Barkley set the school record for rushing touchdowns (43). Barkley finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy race and was taken No. 2 in the April draft.
