PSU season snapshot

A daily series featuring each Penn State football season from 1947-2019:

Year: 1975

Coach: Joe Paterno

Final record: 9-3

Final ranking: AP No. 10, UPI No. 10

Regular-season wins: Temple, Stanford, Iowa, Kentucky, West Virginia, Syracuse, Army, Maryland, Pitt

Regular-season losses: Ohio State, N.C. State

Bowl game: Lost to Alabama, 13-6, in the Sugar Bowl

Team stat leaders: Woody Petchel rushed for 621 yards; John Andress passed for 991 yards; Dick Barvinchak caught 17 passes for 327 yards; Greg Buttle had 140 tackles; Ron Coder had 5 sacks; Tom Odell had 4 interceptions

All-Americans: K Chris Bahr, LB Greg Buttle, OG Tom Rafferty

Neil Rudel’s take: Tired of not earning enough respect, Paterno got Woody Hayes to agree to a two-for-one schedule arrangement (one home, two away), but the Lions didn’t have enough offense, losing 17-9 in Columbus. The other regular-season loss came, again, to NC State and Lou Holtz (15-14). The Lions did manage to beat rival Pitt, 7-6 at Three Rivers Stadium, thanks to Panther kicker Carson Long missing three field goals and having an extra point blocked. Bear Bryant handpicked Penn State as a Sugar Bowl opponent and the Lions cooperated, losing 13-6.
