Neil Rudel’s take: Not sure who handled the schedule through this era, but it sure wasn’t Joe Paterno, as the Lions often played five games on the road to just four at home, and here was another example. Vanderbilt appeared out of nowhere on the schedule and beat the Lions 32-20 in the only matchup between the teams to this day. And a home-and-home with Marquette — starting on the road — appeared, along with an extended series with Holy Cross. The Nits went 4-1 in their last five — four of them on the road — with the lone loss at Pitt 14-13 to wind up 6-3.
