PSU season snapshot: 1964

A daily series featuring each Penn State football season from 1947-2019:

Year: 1964

Coach: Rip Engle

Final record: 6-4

Final ranking: UPI No. 14

Regular-season wins: Army, West Virginia, Maryland, Ohio State, Houston, Pitt

Regular-season losses: Navy, UCLA, Oregon, Syracuse

Bowl game: None

Team stat leaders: Tom Urbanik rushed for 625 yards; Gary Wydman passed for 832 yards; Bill Huber caught 25 passes for 347 yards; Frank Hershey, Dick Gingrich and Mike Irwin each intercepted 3 passes

All-American: C/OG Glenn Ressler

Neil Rudel’s take: Joe Paterno flirted with the Yale job but decided to stay at PSU, which made him the associate head coach and Engle’s heir apparent. Lions opened 0-3 and 1-4 before winning five straight, including a 27-0 smackdown at No. 2 Ohio State, which the Associated Press tagged “the upset of the year,” and was surely the best win of Engle’s tenure. Bishop Guilfoyle product Bill Huber led the team in receiving yardage and fellow Marauder Mike Irwin cracked lineup in secondary. Team voted down chance to play in Gator Bowl — the last time players had such input.
