Team stat leaders: Jim Kerr rushed for 389 yards and caught 13 passes for 163 yards; Galen Hall passed for 448 yards; Don Jonas intercepted 3 passes

Neil Rudel’s take: Joe Paterno was among those against the idea of moving Beaver Field from on campus to its current location, urging Rip Engle to plead the case to university higher-ups. As Beaver Stadium would eventually swell to 100,000-plus, Paterno would often joke about it later. As it was, the first game at Beaver Stadium drew 22,259 (a win over Boston U). Eddie Caye scored the first TD in stadium history … Losses came to Syracuse, Missouri and Illinois, and the Lions dominated Oregon in another Liberty Bowl, also in Philly. Tailgating was introduced, following an Ivy League tradition, at Beaver Stadium.
