Neil Rudel’s take: Engle begins to make progress as the Lions won their first five games, including beating Nebraska for the third time in four seasons. They were smacked down by No. 1 Michigan State 34-7, but bounced back to win at both Penn and Pitt, both ranked opponents. Season saw emergence of quarterback Tony Rados. His favorite target was basketball standout Jesse Arnelle (season record 33 catches).
