Neil Rudel’s take: Rip Engle arrived after a successful run at Brown and was able to bring just one assistant coach with him — Joe Paterno. The Lions opened by beating Georgetown and after a 1-3-1 start, they finished strong with four straight wins, including 21-20 over Pitt at Forbes Field that was postponed a week due to a major snowstorm. Football scholarships were now up to 45.
