PSU backup QB set to transfer

Penn State is losing one of its backup quarterbacks.

Redshirt freshman Michael Johnson Jr. has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, Lions 247 Sports is reporting.

Johnson, a four-star prospect from Oregon, was in the running for the third-team spot, along with fellow redshirt frosh Ta’Quan Roberson, behind projected starter Sean Clifford and backup Will Levis.

The 6-2, 200-pound Johnson did not appear in a game last year.

In addition to Clifford, Levis and Roberson, the Nittany Lions have incoming freshman Micah Bowens of Las Vegas and a commitment for 2021 from highly-touted Christian Veilleux of Canada.

Penn State’s players begin voluntary workouts today.
