PSU women’s soccer home Friday

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State women’s soccer program will host the first round of the NCAA Tournament this Friday against Stony Brook at 6 p.m.

Penn State earned the No. 4 national seed in its portion of the bracket.

The Nittany Lions are returning to the NCAA Tournament for the 25th consecutive season and will meet Stony Brook for the second time in the NCAA Tournament since 2017. In 2017, the Nittany Lions defeated Stony Brook 7-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The winner of the first round game between Penn State and Stony Brook will face the winner of Arizona and TCU in the next round of the NCAA Tournament.

PSU Altoona volleyball in ECAC event

The Penn State Altoona women’s volleyball team has been selected to compete in the 2019 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship Tournament, it was announced on Monday afternoon.

The 2019 tournament bracket consists of a 12-team field, with matchups divided into four pods. Penn State Altoona took the No. 4 seed in Pod 4, and the Lady Lions will travel to play the pod’s No. 1 seed, Grove City College, this Wednesday at 7 p.m.

This marks the seventh time in Penn State Altoona women’s volleyball program history that it has earned a berth into an ECAC postseason tournament. The team’s most recent ECAC Tournament appearance was at the end of the 2017 season.

The winner of the match will advance to face either Misericordia University or Brooklyn College in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Lady Lions are 12-12 overall this year.

Swanson wins honor for PSU Altoona men

Penn State Altoona freshman Isaac Swanson was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Men’s Swimmer of the Week on Monday.

Swanson had a hand in three total first place finishes for the Lions in a dual meet win at non-conference opponent Juniata College this past Saturday. The freshman won two individual swims and was also part of a first place finish in a relay event.

Swanson won the 200 IM in 2:19.37. He also took first in the 400 freestyle in 4:23.03. Additionally, Swanson was part of the team that won the 200.

This is Swanson’s first collegiate AMCC Men’s Swimmer of the Week award, and it is the first time this season that a Lions men’s swimmer has earned the honor.

Dangelo picks up another AMCC award

For the third time this season, Penn State Altoona freshman Grace Dangelo has been named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Women’s Swimmer of the Week.

The AMCC recognized Dangelo as its top women’s swimmer of the week after another strong performance by the freshman this past Saturday, when she totaled two first place finishes in a tri-meet with Juniata College and California University of Pennsylvania.

Dangelo won the 200 freestyle in 2:15.93. She also prevailed in the 100 backstroke in 1:10.32.

This also marks the fourth time overall that a Penn State Altoona women’s swimmer has won the award this year.
