PSU Altoona benefit set for Nov. 30

Penn State Altoona’s club ice hockey and College Hockey East have teamed up with the Mario Lemieux Foundation, The Griffith Family Foundation and THON for the College Hockey Combats Cancer campaign.

Purple Puck Night will take place Friday, Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. when the Nittany Lions host the Saint Vincent Bearcats at Galactic Ice Rink in Altoona.

The evening will kick off with a ceremony to support those fighting cancer, to celebrate those who have beaten it, and to honor families that have lost someone to the disease. During intermission, a mini-scrimmage will take place between Altoona area youth hockey teams.

Penn State students will have a chance to win Penn State hockey tickets, and all fans in attendance will have the chance to win Pittsburgh Penguin tickets donated by Mike Magee, Penn State Altoona’s ice hockey assistant coach. Attendees will be able to bid on raffle baskets, t-shirts, commemorative pucks, a PK Subban jersey, art work by Tammy Stubbs, and Pittsburgh Penguin tickets. There will also be an auction for an autographed hockey stick by Pittsburgh Penguin draftee and Hollidaysburg’s own Sam Lafferty.

The event raises awareness and funds for cancer research.

Women’s soccer

UNIVERSITY PARK – The No. 14 Penn State women’s soccer team will play the No. 5-ranked, and No. 1-seeded, Florida State Seminoles on Friday in the semifinals of the NCAA Division I Tournament/

The match is set for 2 p.m. at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Tallahassee, Florida. The match will also be streamed on ESPN3.com.

UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State women’s basketball head coach Coquese Washington has signed the No. 18 recruiting class in the nation as ranked by the ESPNW HoopGurlz Class Rankings, with five signees inking their National Letters of Intent during the November signing period.

The five-member class is comprised of Mya Bembry, Anna Camden, Madison Greene, Jayla James and Makenna Marisa. The five new Lady Lions, who will join the program as the Class of 2023, will bring accomplished athletic and academic pedigrees to Penn State.

“This class is a great compliment to the players we already have on our roster and brings depth at both the guard and the forward positions,” said Washington. “They have a lot of ball skills in passing, shooting, dribbling and defensive skills. They are tremendous compliments to who we already have on our roster and will help us to continue to compete at the highest level.”

Women’s volleyball

UNIVERSITY PARK – The Penn State women’s volleyball team saw freshman right side Jonni Parker earn her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor on Monday afternoon for her performances against No. 19 Michigan and Northwestern.

Parker had a monster weekend, averaging a team-high 4.00 kills per set .500 hitting, committing just two hitting errors in 44 attempts. She also added 16 total digs for 2.67 per set, and averaged 4.50 points per set over the week.In a takedown of No. 19 Michigan, Parker put down 13 kills in three sets, hitting .440, and added nine digs, and a block.
