Lady Lions cruise to rout of Rider

UNIVERSITY PARK – Behind the first career double-double for Kaliyah Mitchell and a career-high 23-point effort from freshman Lindsey Spann the Penn State Lady Lions (3-7) cruised to an 85-51 victory over Rider (2-7) on Sunday afternoon at the Bryce Jordan Center.

The win was a complete team effort, with five players scoring at least seven points. Candice Agee joined Spann and Mitchell in double figures with 19 points, while Keke Sevillian notched a career-high nine points and Sierra Moore added seven tallies.

Ten rebounds and 12 points made up the first career double-double for Mitchell, who shot 4-of-7 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line in the game. Her 10 rebounds tied a career-high, and she added four steals, one block and one assist against the Broncs.

Spann connected on a career-high 11 field goals, including one three-pointer, on her way to a game- and career-high 23 points. The freshman also tied her career-bests with five rebounds and five assists. Her points and field goals made totals are the most for a Lady Lion this season.

Agee narrowly missed a double-double, equaling her career-high with nine boards, while swatting a personal-best five shots to move past the 50-blocks mark for her career. Agee now has 20 blocks on the season and 54 for her career.

Along with a career night in the scoring column, Sevillian tied her career-best with four rebounds, equaled her season-high mark of three steals and handed out four assists. Moore tied her career-high with seven assists and added four rebounds.

The Lady Lions set season highs for field goals made (36), field goals attempted (67), field goal percentage (.537) and rebounds (53), while blocking eight shots in their win over Rider. They also notched a season-best 56 points in the paint, owning a 56-22 edge.

The 50-point first half marks the second time this season that Penn State reached the half-century mark in a half (Wagner, 54) and the 34-point margin of victory is the largest of the season for the Blue and White.

The Lady Lions were fueled by Spann early on, as the freshman got off to a big start with eight points in the first 4 minutes to help them race out to a double-digit first half lead. Spann’s layup with 16:58 to play pushed the Lions ahead, 15-7, and Sevillian’s layup and two free throws moved that advantage to 19-7 just 45 seconds later.

Penn State’s lead hovered around 20 points for most of the last eight minutes of the opening half, with its largest lead coming at 50-23 with 14 seconds left. Dominique Brooks took a pass from Peyton Whitted and converted the layup to push the home team ahead by 27 points entering halftime.
