Bucs continue spring struggles

BRADENTON, Fla. — The Pittsburgh Pirates were held to five hits in a 3-1 loss to Toronto on Monday afternoon in spring training league action.

The Pirates (3-13-1) got their only run on an RBI double from Oneil Cruz in the seventh inning. Teammate Kevin Newman had two of the Pirates five hits.

Starter Trevor Williams pitched three innings of shutout ball. He struck out two, walked two and gave up two hits. Reliever Williams Jerez was charged witht wo earned runs and did not record an out in the fourth. He gave up one hit and walked three. Geoff Hartlieb, gave up the other run in two-thirds of an inning.

Kyle Crick and Edgar Santana each struck out two in one inning of work. Keone Kela also worked a shutout inning.

The Pirates are slated to play Detroit this afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Derek Holland is expected to start with Chris Stratton, Robbie Erlin and Dovydas Neverauskas working in relief.
