Pirates lose both split-squad games in Florida

Bucs will face Gerrit Cole tonight

BRADENTON, Fla. — The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped two games Sunday in Grapefruit League action and fell to 0-3 in the early going during spring training.

The Pirates played split-squad games, hosting the Detroit Tigers in one and traveling to Clearwater to play the Philadelphia Phillies in the other.

In the home game at LECOM Park, Derek Holland started and allowed two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings as the Pirates lost, 8-4. Holland struck out all five outs he recorded.

The Pirates led 3-2 after two innings, but Detroit scored three runs in the seventh on its way to victory. Robbie Erlin allowed three runs in relief for the Bucs.

Richard Rodriguez and Sam Howard allowed one run apiece in relief for the Pirates.

Oneil Cruz went 1-for-2 with an RBI double for the Bucs. JT Riddle was 2-for-2 with a triple, walk and RBI, and Luke Maile was 2-for-3.

Trevor Williams got roughed up for four runs in the first inning as the Pirates fell to the Phillies, 4-3. Williams allowed four hits and walked one in two innings, then six relievers combined to shut out the Phillies the rest of the way.

Jose Osuna had two hits for the Pirates, while Kevin Newman had one.

The Pirates play the New York Yankees tonight in Tampa at 6:35. Chris Archer will start for the Bucs, while former Pirate Gerrit Cole will make his debut for the Yankees.

Cole signed with the Yankees this offseason after pitching for the Houston Astros last season and having the most dominant year of his career.

Edgar Santana, Chris Stratton, Yacksel Rios, Luis Escobar, Nik Turley and Nick Mears are scheduled to pitch in relief for the Pirates tonight.
