Colts lose starting QB for rest of season
NFL notebook
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts confirmed their worst fear Monday — quarterback Daniel Jones will miss the rest of this season with a torn right Achilles tendon.
Then came the surprise — backup Riley Leonard injured his right knee Sunday. Now the Colts must find a quick fix after losing their third straight. Coach Shane Steichen says Anthony Richardson isn’t expected to be activated from injured reserve this week and if Leonard can’t go next weekend at Seattle, veteran Brett Rypien could start — even though he’s still on the practice squad.
That means if the Colts are going to salvage their fading playoff hopes, they may have to add an outsider who can win a couple of their final four games, all against teams in the playoff hunt.
Elsewhere in the NFL:
– The NFL flexed the Week 16 game between New England and Baltimore into the Sunday night prime time slot. The league announced the change Monday. The previously scheduled game was Cincinnati at Miami.
– Commanders tight end Zach Ertz will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee. Washington coach Dan Quinn delivered the news after Ertz had an MRI exam. He was injured in the team’s 32-0 loss at Minnesota Sunday.
