GREEN BAY, Wis. — Jalen Hurts threw a 36-yard pass to DeVonta Smith for Philadelphia’s only touchdown as the Eagles’ defense led the way to a 10-7 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Monday night.

Brandon McManus’ attempt at a game-tying, 64-yard field goal as time expired fell several yards short.

Green Bay’s second straight loss dropped the Packers (5-3-1) to third place in the NFC North, behind Detroit and Chicago. The Packers, who owned the NFC’s best record before their 16-13 loss to Carolina on Nov. 2, would have the conference’s seventh and final playoff seed if the regular season ended now.

A defensive struggle that featured the first halftime tie of the season had a serious lack of big plays until the Eagles (7-2) delivered a one-two punch early in the fourth quarter.

Philadelphia led 3-0 and faced third-and-7 from its own 23 when Saquon Barkley caught a pass 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage, made a spin move past cornerback Carrington Valentine and burst up-field for a 41-yard gain.

On the next play, Smith made a leaping catch in the end zone over safety Evan Williams, giving the Eagles a 10-0 lead with 10:35 remaining.

Daboll done

NEW YORK — The New York Giants fired coach Brian Daboll on Monday.

The move by ownership and general manager Joe Schoen was made a day after the Giants blew a late lead and lost 24-20 at the Chicago Bears to fall to 2-8 on the season.

New York has lost four in a row since upsetting defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia at home in prime time. Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was named as the interim coach.

Daboll, whose team has lost four games this year in which it led in the fourth quarter by double digits, had faced increasing pressure in recent weeks as the losses mounted. Schoen will remain in his role and lead the search for the next coach.

Burrow returns

CINCINNATI — Joe Burrow returned to practice with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The franchise quarterback’s appearance on Monday opened the 21-day window for him to return to the lineup. His practice time will not count against the 53-player active roster.

Burrow is eligible to be activated during the three-week window. However, coach Zac Taylor says Burrow won’t return for Sunday’s game at Pittsburgh.

The Bengals have lost six of seven since Burrow suffered a toe injury in mid-September that required surgery. It’s possible that Burrow could return sooner than initial estimates after he got hurt.

D.C. turmoil

ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne was suspended for one game without pay by the NFL for hitting Detroit Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown during the teams’ game.

Payne was suspended on Monday. He was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct in the second quarter of Washington’s 44-22 loss to visiting Detroit on Sunday. He will miss Washington’s game this Sunday in Spain against the Miami Dolphins after his appeal to attempt to play was denied.

Also, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn is going to replace Joe Whitt Jr. as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Quinn announced the change Monday, a day after 3-7 Washington’s losing streak reached five games with a 44-22 defeat against the visiting Detroit Lions. Detroit accumulated 546 yards and 30 first downs and scored on each of its first eight possessions; its ninth ended with a kneeldown.

It was Washington’s fourth consecutive loss by at least 21 points, the longest such streak within one NFL season since 2002.

Serious injury

HENDERSON, Nev. — Las Vegas Raiders right guard Jackson Powers-Johnson is going on injured reserve with a serious ankle injury.

Coach Pete Carroll announced the decision on Monday. Powers-Johnson was injured during Thursday night’s 10-7 loss at Denver. A person close to the situation told The Associated Press that he could be out for the rest of the season.

Powers-Johnson was drafted in the second round in 2024 out of Oregon. He has struggled with injuries since joining the Raiders. He was expected to start at center but moved to guard. Alex Cappa is likely to start in his place.

Out of action

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton recently underwent surgery for testicular cancer.

He played against the Las Vegas Raiders just four days after learning of his diagnosis. Singleton collected nine tackles in the Broncos’ 10-7 win. He will miss the upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs but hopes to return soon.

The Broncos stated their priority is Singleton’s health, and they are grateful the cancer was caught early.

Starting at $2.99/week.
