ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Big Ten announced that Southern California should have received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during its game against Northwestern on Friday night.

This was due to a reserve quarterback wearing the same number as the Trojans’ regular punter while executing a fake punt. Early in the second quarter, Sam Huard completed a pass that led to a touchdown five plays later.

The Big Ten stated that USC should have been penalized under the NCAA’s Unfair Tactics rule. The conference plans to continue reviewing the situation with both schools. Northwestern’s coach did not complain about the play after the game.
