New Brunswick’s No. 10 hitter roughs up Cumming Motors in win

AAABA Baseball Tournament

JOHNSTOWN — Altoona Cumming Motors was done in by New Brunswick, mainly its No. 10 hitter Dawson Smail, in dropping a 12-2 seven-inning game on the opening day of the AAABA National Tournament at Roxbury Park on Monday.

Smail smacked two grand slams, one in an eight-run first inning and one in the bottom of the fourth. He finished going 3-for-3 with eight RBIs. Carter Cumiskey added a two-run double in the first inning for New Brunswick.

New Brunswick starter Mathew King kept Cumming in check, giving up just two hits in four innings to earn the win, and Jackson Welsh followed with two no-hit innings.

Cumming managed to score two runs in the top of the seventh inning off New Brunswick’s third pitcher, Lucs Malamug, with Aiden Steinbugl drilling a solo home run and Adam Cooper hitting a sacrifice fly to score Braedyn Kormanic.

Cumming Motors, now 0-1 in Pool D, will play Johnstown Mainline Pharmacy at 7 p.m. tonight at Point Stadium.
