PSU graduate works out of Mets’ bullpen

UNIVERSITY PARK –Former Penn State baseball pitcher Justin Hagenman made his Major League Baseball debut on Wednesday for the New York Mets against the Minnesota Twins.

Hagenman entered the game in the second inning and went 3• innings. He allowed just one run on three hits, while striking out four. He recorded two strikeouts in his first inning, including a punch out against the first batter he faced.

He is the 24th Penn State player to appear in a MLB game and the first since Nate Bump in 2005.

Hagenman was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 23rd round of the 2018 MLB Draft.

His professional baseball journey through the Minors includes stops with the Ogden Raptors (2018), Great Lakes Loons (2018-19), Tulsa Drillers (2021-22), Oklahoma City Dodgers (2022-23), Worchester Red Sox (2023-24) and Syracuse Mets (2025).

He was traded from the Dodgers to the Boston Red Sox in July 2023 and signed with the Mets on November of 2024.

In his minor league career, Hagenman is 32-16 with 22 saves and a 3.95 ERA in 203 appearances (27 starts). He has pitched in 419.1 innings and collected 433 strikeouts.

Hagenman was a three-year starter at Penn State from 2016-18, posting a 4.64 ERA, 10 wins and 190 strikeouts. He is fourth all-time at Penn State with 42 career starts.

Rehab begins

NEW YORK — New York Yankees pitcher Luis Gil is delaying the beginning of his throwing program because his strained right lat is healing slowly.

Gil was slated to start his throwing program on Wednesday or Thursday, but Yankees manager Aaron Boone said an MRI showed the right-hander needs more time before progressing in his rehab.

“It’s just the level of healing,” Yanks manager Aaron Boone said before New York’s series finale against the Kansas City Royals. “So, it’s got to get to, I don’t know, 80 percent. When they start, there are checkmarks of when you start the throwing program. It’s going how it should, it’s just we need another 10 days.”

Gil, the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year, stopped a bullpen session on Feb. 28 because of tightness in his pitching shoulder. He went to New York for a second MRI that revealed a high-grade lat strain on March 3.

Positive signs

TORONTO — Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Strider allowed two runs and five hits in five-plus innings in his return to the mound against the Toronto Blue Jays. Making his first big league appearance in over a year because of surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, Strider struck out five, walked one and hit a batter.

“He’s extremely important to our club and especially to our rotation,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “It’s good to have him back.”

He threw 97 pitches, 58 for strikes. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had two of the five hits off Strider, including an RBI single in the third inning and a solo home run in the sixth.

“I think as he’s out there he’s going to get stronger,” Snitker said of Strider. “He’s got some moxie about him and competitiveness. He’s going to be fine.”

Twin injuries

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins will place starting right fielder Matt Wallner on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring.

They believe they’ve avoiding a long-term absence for shortstop Carlos Correa with his sore left wrist. Wallner was held out of the 4-3 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday.

He felt tightness in the muscle while running out an infield hit in the first inning the night before. The Twins removed shortstop Willi Castro from the game with mild tightness in his right oblique. Correa took over in the field, but his place in the order didn’t come up.

DFA time

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox have designated right-hander Mike Clevinger for assignment.

The 34-year-old Clevinger allowed three runs in the ninth inning of Tuesday’s 12-3 loss to the Athletics. He is 0-2 with a 7.94 ERA in five appearances this year — all in relief after spending most of his career as a starter.

Clevinger signed with Chicago in free agency in December 2022, April 2024 and again in February.

He is 9-14 with a 4.24 ERA in 28 starts and eight relief appearances with the White Sox.

Starting at $2.99/week.
