HERSHEY — Northern Bedford’s Raegan Snider said on Thursday she figured there was a 95 percent chance that she would be wrestling Chestnut Ridge rival Juliet Alt in the 155-pound finals of the girls PIAA Championships.
It turned out that Snider knew what she was talking about.
The returning state third-placer advanced to the finals on Friday to wrestle Alt with two wins on the second day at the Giant Center.
Snider earned a 7-0 win over Avon Grove’s Kaitlynn Arnold in the quarterfinals and followed that up with an 8-1 win over General McLane’s Whisper Abercrombie in the semifinals.
Alt, meanwhile, rolled to a 14-0 major decision over Olivya Kroope of Emmaus in the quarterfinals. Alt followed that by amassing a 10-0 lead and then pinning Delaware Valley’s Kate Prior in 4:44.
It will be the fifth meeting of Snider and Alt, with Alt holding a 3-1 edge. Snider rode Alt out in the ultimate tiebreaker in the finals at the District 5-6-9 Tournament, but Alt won by injury default when an ill Snider took her last timeout in the Central Regional.
“I’m just excited,” Snider said. “Me and Juliet have battles all the time. I got her at districts. She got me during the season. Last week, I don’t really count it because I had the stomach bug. I think it will be just as good, if not better, of a match than it was at districts.”
Snider was locked into a 1-1 bout with Abercrombie when she used a whizzer-type throw to take Abercrombie to her back for seven points.
“That’s going back to wrestling freestyle and Greco in the summer,” Northern Bedford coach Zach Clark said. “She goes that quite frequently. Sometimes we try to talk her out of it, but in that instance it worked great for her.”
“Yeah, I’m not really supposed to hit that,” Snider said laughing. “I get yelled at every time, but the joke is on him. I was freaking out a little bit, but I knew I was going to win it. That sounds awful, but I didn’t know by how much. She was just strong.”
In the quarterfinals, Snider got a takedown with a step over-type move in the first period. After riding the entire second period, Snider escaped and took Arnold down again to secure the win. She nearly turned Arnold twice with a bar-arm, but the official stopped in both times for being potentially dangerous.
“It felt a lot better than the first match,” Snider said. “I felt more dominant. It was good to get it out of the way too. I kept trying to turn her, and she was just really flexible, so I knew I wasn’t going to get the fall. I wasn’t in any urgency to score.”
“She wrestled very well,” Clark said. “I she felt she didn’t wrestle that great, but she was dominant and working her stuff. I’m very proud of her.”
Northern Bedford junior Kaylee Ebersole (100) and senior Ava Helsel (106), though, were eliminated.
Ebersole, a returning state sixth-placer who won her second Central Regional title last week, was pinned by Executive Education’s Anabelle Ramos in 4:39 on Friday.
Helsel, who had a goal of just winning one bout this year, went 1-2 in Hershey. She was pinned by Big Spring’s Jordyn Suhina in 2:42 on Friday.
“Ebersole and Helsel both had tough matches,” Clark said. “In my opinion, I think they were both winnable. We were in both of the matches, but things just didn’t go our way.
“Ebersole can come back and work off of it for next year. Helsel had a great season overall. I’m very proud of both of them. I know they didn’t necessarily reach their goals, but with Ebersole I think it’s going to help give her fire for next year.”
Ridge’s Lasure dominates
Alt’s sister and returning state champion Violette Lasure dominated her way to the 148-pound finals today.
She recorded pins of Big Spring’s Lily Raudabaugh in 1:18 in the quarterfinals and Trinity’s Elaina Ashby in the semifinals.
Philipsburg-Osceola’s Charli Hunt suffered her first loss of the season, 7-5, to Connellsville’s Janaya Nobles in the quarterfinals. But Hunt rallied from down 6-0, turned Corry’s Koda Kuzma twice and pinned her in 3:44 to make the medal round.
Bedford’s Mylah Steinbuch dropped a 7-5 decision to Bethlehem Liberty’s Addyson Munro in the quarterfinals.
