Cole done for season

TAMPA, Fla. — Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will have season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday.

The Yankees said the 34-year-old right-hander was examined Monday by Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles. ElAttrache, the Dodgers’ head team physician, will operate.

“This isn’t the news any athlete wants to hear, but it’s the necessary next step for my career,” Cole said in a statement. “I have a lot left to give, and I’m fully committed to the work ahead. I’ll attack my rehab every day and support the 2025 Yankees each step of the way. … I can’t wait to be back on the mound — stronger than ever.”

Cole experienced discomfort following his second spring training outing Thursday. He is 153-80 with a 3.18 ERA in 12 seasons for Pittsburgh (2013-17), Houston (2018-19) and the Yankees (2020-24).

Max Fried now heads a rotation that includes Carlos Rodon, Clarke Schmidt and Marcus Stroman. Will Warren and Carlos Carrasco are among the options for a fifth starter.

The Butler gets it

MESA, Ariz. — Outfielder Lawrence Butler and the Athletics have finalized a $65.5 million, seven-year contract, another major investment for a team preparing to spend three seasons playing in a temporary minor league home.

The deal includes a team option for 2032 that could make the contract worth $81.5 million and escalators that could increase the value to $87.5 million.

A 24-year-old who was a sixth-round pick in the 2018 amateur draft, Butler was on Oakland’s opening-day roster last year, as demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas for a month and finished with a .262 average, 22 homers and 18 stolen bases.

Why the delay?

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Dave Roberts and the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers won’t yet say they have agreed to a new contract.

Multiple reports on Monday say the Dodgers and Roberts have worked out a $32.4 million, four-year deal that would keep him with the club through 2029.

At that figure he could have the highest average salary among managers, topping a five-year deal in 2024 for Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell worth more than $40 million. “I can’t talk so much about it, but I do think there is finally some closure,” Roberts said. The Dodgers open the season against the Chicago Cubs on March 18 in Tokyo.

Starting at $2.99/week.
