BG, Carroll will get rematch

Bishop Guilfoyle Academy and Bishop Carroll Catholic will meet next Saturday in a rematch of their District 6 championship game, only this time the teams will be playing for the right to go to Hershey and play for the state championship.

The Lady Marauders blitzed Saint Joseph’s, 66-48, at the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse on Saturday by starting the game on a 28-2 run.

Bishop Guilfoyle connected on 12 3-pointers, including five by Gia Adams off the bench.

Adams was one of five girls who scored in double figures for the Lady Marauders, joining Mary Haigh (13) and Layona Williams, Maurie Querry and Anberlyn Petrecca, who each scored 10 points.

Saint Joseph’s got 25 points from star junior Naomi Crispin, who is the daughter of former Penn State player Joe Crispin. The Wolfpack also got 13 points and 14 rebounds from Aubrey Yartz.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Williamsburg was denied a chance to play against Bishop Guilfoyle in the PIAA semifinals for the second year in a row by a hot-shooting Bishop Carroll team, 60-47, led by Emily Lucko — who finished with a game-high 23 points.

Adelyn Myers and Ava Pablic each added 12 points for the Lady Huskies.

Levada Gorsuch led Williamsburg with 19 points, and senior Anastasia Ranalli scored 12 points in her final high school game.

Bishop Carroll held Williamsburg junior LeeAnna Royer, who did not play in the first quarter due to what Williamsburg coach Angela Detwiler called a “coaching decision,” to five points.

Lady Tigers defeated

South Fayette received double-figure scoring efforts from three players and defeated Hollidaysburg, 70-52, in a PIAA Class 5A girls basketball quarterfinal-round playoff game Saturday afternoon at Armstrong Junior-Senior High School in Kittanning.

Junior forward Juliette Leroux scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed a game-high six rebounds for WPIAL runner-up South Fayette (27-2), which also got 17 points from junior Haylie Lamonde and 13 from sophomore guard Lailah Wright. South Fayette moves on to next week’s semifinal round and a rematch with WPIAL champion Peters Township, which defeated District 10 champ Cathedral Prep, 35-25, in another quarterfinal-round game Saturday at Clarion University.

District 6 champion Hollidaysburg, which finished a 25-4 season, was led by junior Makenna Weimert’s 15 points and senior Bella Vent’s 14.
