Pickleball event set for this weekend
The fourth annual Dinking in the New Year Pickleball Tournament will be held at the Gorilla House this Saturday and Sunday.
The event starts at 9 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday with 126 players from three states and with 267 matches on 12 courts newly surfaced at the Gorilla House.
The event is run by Pickleball Visions, LLC, and volunteers are from the Tyrone Pickleball Club.
Cherry honored
TRAFFORD — Washington & Jefferson College senior basketball player Adalynn Cherry was recently named Presidents Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete of the Month for December.
Cherry helped the women’s basketball team jump out to a 5-1 record in the first month. She hit on 42.5-percent of her shots from the floor and was shooting 78 percent from the foul line.
The three-year captain had her best game when she scored 14 points and added five rebounds, two blocks and an assist in a win over Penn State Behrend.
Cherry, with a double major in economics and spanish, has a 4.0 grade-point average.
Wrestlers lose
The Penn State Altoona men’s wrestling team made its NCAA debut at home but the Lions dropped a 42-10 match to Fairmont State at Adler Gymnasium.
Andrew Weaver had no trouble with Fairmont’s Navid Ighani as the Tyrone graduate claimed a 15-4 major decision in the 174-pound bout.
Evan Davis started the match with a 6-0 win at 125-pounds for Penn State Altoona.
Tyrone rifle falls
JOHNSTOWN — Micah Leman shot a 257 to claim top shooter as Conemaugh Township handed Tyrone Christian a 1164-794 loss in high school rifle action.
Michael Ellenberger was the top shooter for Tyrone Christian with a 215 score.
