Altoona grad earns soccer honor

ANNVILLE — Lebanon Valley College’s Darrian Berkheimer was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region IV Second Team.

Berkheimer is a member of the Flying Dutchmen women’s soccer team.

She led the Dutchmen with 20 points on nine goals and two assists to earn her first All-Region honor at midfielder. The senior was 54th in the nation with four game-winning goals and was 31st with a .660 shot accuracy.

Berkheimer, a graduate of Altoona Area Senior High School, is pursuing a bachelor of science in exercise science at Lebanon Valley College.

Barr top frosh

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State Nittany Lion wrestler Josh Barr was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the week.

Barr’s honor is the second Big Ten weekly wrestling honor for Penn State this season.

Barr rolled to an 11-3 win against Lehigh’s Michael Beard. Barr picked up three takedowns, including two in a strong third period, to roll to the win. Barr’s victory was one of nine for Penn State in a 36-3 win over the Mountain Hawks.

Fusco shines

UNIVERSITY PARK –Penn State women’s soccer senior midfielder Jordan Fusco garnered College Sports Communicators second-team Academic All-America laurels this week.

Fusco had a career year while leading the Nittany Lions to the national quarterfinals for the second year in a row, starting and playing a career-best 25 matches while leading PSU to 15 wins in addition to the program’s 30th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and eighth-straight Sweet 16.

Fusco shattered her career-high with 12 assists and added a trio of goals for a career-high 18-point scoring season. She recorded the most assists in a single season by a Nittany Lion since the 2020-21 spring campaign.

AMCC honors

Penn State Altoona student-athletes representing the department’s five fall sports teams were voted to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Fall All-Sportsmanship Team by their peers this week.

All teams that compete for an AMCC championship select one member from each of their rosters who displays good sportsmanship throughout the season to be included on the All-Sportsmanship team. These individuals are selected by a vote of their teammates.

They include Abigail Brinker (volleyball), Bishop Guilfoyle graduate Nicholas Helsley (golf), Abigail Morgan (tennis), Jonathan Hill (soccer) and Hannah Brubaker (soccer).
