Georgia needs eight OTs to beat Georgia Tech

The Associated Press

ATHENS, Ga. — Nate Frazier ran for a 2-point conversion in the eighth overtime of a marathon for the ages after No. 6 Georgia pulled off an improbable fourth-quarter comeback, giving the Bulldogs a 44-42 victory over Georgia Tech on Friday night.

After falling behind 17-0 at halftime and being dominated most of the game, the Bulldogs (10-2, No. 7 CFP) may have locked up a spot in the College Football Playoff — no matter how they fare in next weekend’s Southeastern Conference championship game.

Carson Beck threw five touchdown passes, two of them in overtime, in a game the Bulldogs never led until after regulation ended 27-all.

Georgia Tech (7-5) was led by Haynes King, who ran for for three touchdowns and threw for two more. But the Yellow Jackets took their seventh straight loss to the Bulldogs, the end coming just a few minutes after midnight on a frigid night between the hedges.

Frazier took a handoff from Beck and burst up the middle, sending fireworks into the sky above Sanford Stadium.

It was the longest game in SEC history and just one overtime shy of the record for any FBS game — Illinois’ 20-18 victory over Penn State in 2021 that went to nine extra periods.

Sanders shines

BOULDER, Colo. — Shedeur Sanders woke up early Friday, won a national award, and then set No. 23 Colorado’s all-time single-season passing record.

The senior quarterback, named winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award before the game against Oklahoma State, came in needing 40 yards to pass Koy Detmer’s 28-year-old record of 3,527 yards.

Sanders got there by hitting LaJohntay Wester for a 10-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Sanders finished with 438 yards in a 52-0 win Friday to close out the regular season with 3,926 yards. Sanders also added five TD passes against the Cowboys to increase his total to a school-best 35 for the season.

Detmer’s yards passing mark came in 1996, when Rick Neuheisel was coaching the Buffs, who went 10-2 and finished the season ranked No. 8 in the AP Top 25.

For Sanders, the Unitas Award, which goes to the nation’s top quarterback, could be the first of a handful.

Two-way standout Travis Hunter, meanwhile, is the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman. He had 10 catches for 116 yards and three touchdowns, along with an interception.

Gophers triumph

MADISON, Wis. — Max Brosmer passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another to help Minnesota beat Wisconsin 21-7 on Friday.

Wide receiver Daniel Jackson had six receptions for 68 yards and a TD catch for the Gophers, who took back possession of Paul Bunyan’s Axe.Darius Taylor had 28 rushes for 126 yards for Minnesota.Friday’s game was the 134th meeting between the teams. The rivalry is the oldest rivalry in the nation among Football Bowl Division schools. Brosmer completed 17 of 26 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for a second score. Brosmer had no interceptions.

There’s a chance

OXFORD, Miss. — Ulysses Bentley rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown and No. 15 Mississippi defeated in-state rival Mississippi State 26-14 in the Egg Bowl, keeping its slim College Football Playoff hope alive.

Jaxson Dart completed 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown for the Rebels (9-3, 5-3 Southeastern Conference). Dart became the Ole Miss career passing yardage leader with a 17-yard strike to Jordan Watkins in the second quarter.

Michael Van Buren completed 17 of 32 passes for 280 yards and a touchdown with an interception for Mississippi State, which closed out its first winless SEC campaign since 2002.

Jeanty again

BOISE, Idaho — Ashton Jeanty rushed for 226 yards and a touchdown, Maddux Madsen threw for two TDs and rushed for one, and No. 11 Boise State defeated Oregon State 34-18.

Jeanty’s performance moved him into fifth place among FBS all-time single-season rushing leaders, leaving him 54 yards behind fourth-place Marcus Allen. Jeanty trails record-holder Barry Sanders, who rushed for 2,628 yards in 1988, by 340 yards with at least two more games guaranteed.

Boise State (11-1, No. 11 CFP) remains the top-ranked conference leader among the Group of Five teams vying for the automatic bid in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff.

Never too old

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois quarterback Michael Lindauer’s coming-out party also was a dazzling farewell.

The senior graduate assistant, pressed into duty as a player again when injuries left the Salukis in need of a quarterback, made his first career start — on Senior Day, no less — and threw for a school-record seven touchdowns in a 62-0 victory over Murray State on Saturday.

The fifth-year senior, a transfer from Cincinnati, completed 20 of 33 passes for 283 yards. Keontez Lewis caught scoring passes of 4 and 64 yards. Bradley Clark had TDs of 35 and 23 yards. Nah’shawn Hezekiah had touchdowns of 19 and 35 yards on his two catches. And Jay Jones caught one pass for 1 yard — also a touchdown.

Before the game, Lindauer had only ever attempted 27 career passes.

Iowa survives

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Drew Stevens kicked a 53-yard field goal as time expired as Iowa rallied to defeat Nebraska 13-10 on Friday.

Stevens got his chance after defensive end Max Llewellyn forced and recovered a fumble by Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola at the Huskers’ 36-yard line with 20 seconds left.

“Drew’s a fricking beast,” Llewellyn said. “What a kick.”

Two runs by Kaleb Johnson took the clock down to three seconds left before Stevens kicked the game-winner.

It was redemption for Stevens who, after struggling in last season’s game against the Huskers, was replaced by Marshall Meeder for the game-winning field goal in Iowa’s 13-10 victory in that game.

“I’ll be honest — I was looking forward to this one,” Stevens said. “I can say that now.”

Stevens remembered what it was like last season when he didn’t get his chance to kick the game-winner.

“I mean, it sucks when somebody else is out there doing your job,” Stevens said.
