PSU, Pitt get opponents for ACC/Big Ten Challenge

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State men’s basketball team will travel to Clemson for the 2022 ACC/Big Ten Men’s Basketball Challenge on Tuesday, Nov. 29, as matchups for the 24th-annual challenge were announced Friday.

Tipoff times and network designations will be announced at a later date. ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the event, with all contests also available to stream via the ESPN App.

The Nittany Lions and Tigers are set to meet for the first time since 2005 and the fourth time in program history.

Penn State is 11-10 all-time in ACC/B1G Men’s Basketball Challenge matchups, including three wins in the last four Challenge games.

The Big Ten has won the challenge in each of the last three seasons (2021, 2020, 2019) after the two conferences split 7-7 in 2018.

Panthers on the road

PITTSBURGH — Pitt will travel to Evanston, Ill., for the second time in the past three seasons to face Northwestern on Monday, Nov. 28 in the 2022 ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

The Panthers are 4-4 all-time in ACC/Big Ten Challenge games, including a 2-2 mark in road contests.

Pitt has won the past four meetings and is 10-10 all-time against the Wildcats. This season’s contest will also mark the third meeting as head coaches between former college teammates Jeff Capel and Chris Collins.

The ACC has a 12-8-3 edge in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge with wins in each of the first 10 years of the event. The Big Ten claimed last year’s challenge with an 8-6 record as a pair of contests.

Students love football

UNIVERSITY PARK — The 21,000-seat Penn State student section at Beaver Stadium once again sold out in short order this week for the upcoming football season, highlighted by the senior (22 minutes), junior (17 minutes), sophomore (19) and freshmen (17) classes.

The Penn State Student Section has consistently sold out for four decades.

The home schedule features seven home games this fall. Penn State kicks off the season on Sept. 10 against Ohio and will return on Sept. 24 against Central Michigan to close out the non-conference slate. The Nittany Lions will host Northwestern on Oct. 1, Minnesota on Oct. 22 and Ohio State on Oct. 29. Penn State will close out the home schedule with contests against Maryland on Nov. 12 and Michigan State on Nov. 26.

The Nittany Lions open the 2022 campaign on Sept. 1 at Purdue. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. on FOX.

SFU hires coaches

LORETTO — Saint Francis University women’s basketball coach Keila Whittington announced the hiring of Tiffany Conner and Brooke LeMar as assistant coaches for the 2022-2023 season.

Conner joins the Red Flash after she spent the 2021-22 season at Chicago State. She was responsible for preparing opponent scouting reports, post player workouts and served as the team’s academic liaison, amongst other responsibilities.

She graduated from Southern New Hampshire with a Master of Science in Sports Management in 2017 after she earned her undergraduate degree in Communications from South Florida in 2012. She led the Bulls with 5.9 rebounds per game during the 2012 season.

LeMar comes to Saint Francis after she spent two seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II member University of Mary. Her responsibilities included scouting opposing teams, organizing and conducting summer camps and player development.

Prior to her coaching experience, LeMar played four seasons professionally in Germany, Australia, Sweden and Denmark. She played two seasons at North Dakota State, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management.
