Mounties, Red Flash lose openers

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Mount Aloysius baseball team opened the 2022 NCAA Division III regional tournament on Friday with a 4-3 loss in extra innings to Christopher Newport.

Aidan Bell, Tyler Quade and Jeremy Iellimo each had two hits for the Mount, while Bell added an RBI. Relief pitcher Chris Hasse, who took over for Quade, the starter, pitched 2ª innings, allowing no earned runs.

The Mount (27-14), which scored all three of its runs in the first inning, is in the elimination round Saturday morning against Kalamazoo (26-11), which fell to Marietta on Friday.

No-hitter

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Senior Keely Rochard turned in a stellar performance on Friday in the first game of the Blacksburg Regional, throwing a no-hitter and striking out 17 to lead No. 3 Virginia Tech over Saint Francis, 4-0, in the NCAA Division I softball regional tournament.

Rochard (24-2) racked up her ninth no-hitter in her storied career. The Hokies (42-7) will play on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Kentucky, which beat Miami (Ohio), 15-1, in five innings.

Rachel Marsden was the losing pitcher for the Red Flash (37-17).

Offensively, the Hokies were paced by freshman Bre Peck, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double. Sophomore Cameron Fagan compiled a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Junior Kelsey Bennett also contributed for Virginia Tech, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

Saint Francis will play Miami (39-16) in an elimination game Saturday.

Sylvan Hills winners

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Lynn Perry, Gary Zimmerman and Mike Morgan were the first-place winners of the Sylvan Hills Golf Club Senior League held on Wednesday

Terry Goldstein, Jim Burke, Gary Hoover and Bill Blanket were second, and the team of Sen Thatch, Dave Biseli, Don Stubbs and Marty Long was third.
