Nittany Lions will get prime-time TV spot

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State football’s game at Ohio State on Saturday, Oct. 30, will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on ABC, it was announced on Monday.

The game will also be available on the Penn State Sports Network (6 p.m. airtime) and GoPSUsports.com.

Ohio State leads the all-time series, 22-14, including a 13-7 mark in Columbus. This Saturday, the Nittany Lions return from their bye week with a noon kickoff at home against Illinois. The homecoming game will be televised on ABC, too.

Pitt gets TV time

PITTSBURGH–The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday that Pitt’s Saturday, Oct. 30 football game against Miami at Heinz Field will kick off at noon and be televised by ACC Network.

The Panthers, 6-1 and ranked No. 23 in the Associated Press college football poll, host Clemson this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN.

Also on Monday, Pitt junior free safety Erick Hallett II was named the ACC Defensive Back of the Week for his performance in the Panthers’ 28-7 victory at Virginia Tech this past weekend.

Hallett compiled four tackles, two pass breakups and a pivotal interception against the Hokies.

With Pitt holding a 7-0 lead in the second quarter, Hallett picked off a Braxton Burmeister pass. The Panthers converted the turnover into a touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

In his first season as a full-time starter, Hallett is Pitt’s third-leading tackler with 26 stops. He has a team-high four pass breakups and shares the team lead with one interception, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.

Flash RB honored

LORETTO — Saint Francis University football running back Marques DeShields earned his second NEC Prime Performers honor of the season on Monday.

DeShields, a redshirt junior, had 14 rushes for 144 yards and one touchdown in Saturday’s game against Bryant. He had a 98-yard touchdown in the third quarter after Bryant punter Ethan Gettman booted a school-record 82-yard punt.

The Lackawanna College product’s 98-yard rush was the longest run in Saint Francis football history.

With his 144-yard outburst, DeShields moved to second in the NEC with 449 rushing yards this season and is also third in the conference with three rushing touchdowns.

n Washington State fired football coach Nick Rolovich and four of his assistants on Monday for refusing a state mandate that all employees get vaccinated against COVID-19, making him the first major college coach to lose his job over vaccination status. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, a Democrat, had set a deadline of Monday for thousands of state employees, including the Cougars’ coach, to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Rolovich applied for a religious exemption. The 42-year-old Rolovich was the highest-paid state employee with an annual salary of more than $3 million in a contract that runs through 2025. He had said he wouldn’t get vaccinated but wouldn’t specify his reasons. He was the only unvaccinated head coach in the Pac-12 but wore a mask during games.
