Central girls soccer team continues strong season

CRESSON — Central improved to 9-1 on Saturday, thanks to a 9-0 win over Penn Cambria in girls high school soccer action.

The Lady Dragons, up 7-0 at halftime, got four goals from Ella Garner. Freshman teammate Leah Johnston added two goals.

Keeper Kat Longenecker stopped two shots in sending the Lady Panthers to a 2-7 record.

Guilfoyle triumphs

TYRONE — Lainey Farabaugh had a hat trick to lead Bishop Guilfoyle past Tyrone, 5-3, in girls soccer action.

Teammate Mallory Dolansky added two goals for the 6-3 Lady Marauders, who led 3-0 at halftime.

The Lady Eagles (6-4) got two goals from Sophia Nelson.

Tie in double OT

CRESSON — Penn Cambria and Central boys played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime in high school soccer action.

Chase Sorichetti scored in the first half for Penn Cambria (1-7-1) while Ben Theys got Central’s goal for the 5-6-1 Dragons.

Duncan Gongloff made 12 saves for the Panthers, while Ben Brumbaugh stopped seven shots for Central.

GROVE CITY — The Altoona boys and girls cross country teams both finished fifth in high school cross country action at the John Sample Grove City Invitational.

On the boys side, Aidan Kelley finished 10th overall in 17:02. For the girls, Reese Wilber placed 12th overall in 20:33.

Silver at Rally

MECHANICSBURG — The Altoona Lady Spikers went 4-4 and lost in the Silver finals of the JV Rally in the Valley Tournament in girls high school volleyball action.

Altoona lost 28-25 to Trinity int he finals after beating Berks Catholic, 25-13 in the semifinals. In pool play, Altoona beat Hershey (25-8, 25-18), split with Hempfield (18-25, 25-23) while losing to Elizabethtown (25-11, 25-11).

Ava Steinbugl had 21 kills and 28 digs to go with 36 digs from Nora Reed. Ellaina Saylor contributed 11 kills while Emerson Steinbugl had 10 kills and 20 digs. Jaiden Krull chipped in with 26 asssists to go with 13 assists from Sami Page.
