Central Cambria has been able to dominate the District 6 Class 2A girls team golf field for much of the past few years with the exception of Westmont Hilltop winning the district title last season.

Along with many of those district titles came championships in the annual Operation Our Town scramble at Park Hills Golf Course.

Now, Penn Cambria is hoping to follow that same format.

The Lady Panthers bested seven other girls teams, including Westmont, Central Cambria, State College and Hollidaysburg, and shot a 2-under par 68 on Monday to claim the title over the runner-up Lady Hilltoppers by three strokes.

“These girls have been working together the past couple years,” Penn Cambria coach Doug Fogel said. “I helped coach some last year, and they have bought into the program whether they are at school, on the course, at practice they are just a great group of girls that has come together, and the sky is the limit for them. We’re hoping to get them peaking at the right time. I take my hat off to these girls, and I’m proud of them.”

Penn Cambria knocked off previously unbeaten Hollidaysburg last week and has just one loss as a team this season. The Lady Panthers have had several different girls medal throughout the year including some of the players on Monday’s scramble team that featured Marlie Krug, Bella Spahr, Alyssa Mostick and Kylee Marshall.

“We’re friends on and off the course, and I think that helps us,” Krug said. “We talk after our rounds about how we can each get better and make ourselves better. We talk about the things we need to work on individually to get us to where we want to go, which is winning districts.”

The Lady Panthers have been close to both Operation Our Town and district titles in the past and may have even surprised themselves by finally coming out on top Monday.

“We work well together,” Spahr said. “We just have a few things to work on. It’s pretty exciting that we won this. I was shocked, but I’m pretty happy. I think we’re playing our best golf right now. If we work on a couple things, we should be good.”

The scramble format allowed everyone to contribute.

“It was pretty even today,” Krug said. “(Spahr) and I hit some long balls and drives, and then in the short game, Kylee and Alyssa really came through with the chipping and putting.”

On the boys side, Kiski shot a 14-under par 56 to edge Somerset and Tyrone by two strokes in the 31-team field. Central shot 60 to finish alone in fourth.

The Golden Eagles will be one of the favorites to win the District 6 Class 2A title on Sept. 28, and Cassidy Miksich, a member of the scramble team Monday, is the favorite to win her third District 6 Class 2A individual girls title on Sept. 30 at Windber Country Club.

The other members of the team, Cyrus Ahlert, Luke Brooks and R.J. Royer, are hoping to make a splash at the District 6 championships at Scotch Valley Country Club next week.

“I’m playing my most solid golf right now,” Royer said. “I shot my best round of the year over the weekend. I’m ready to move into sectionals, districts and hopefully states.”

Royer recently won the Mountain League MVP in a playoff and helped lead Tyrone to a league title. Now, he’s eyeing a district championship.

“I think we could,” Royer said. “We have to play our best, but there’s definitely a chance.”
