Central grad has solid first week

LATROBE — Saint Vincent College football player Cam Norris was named Presidents Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Norris, a graduate of Central High School, led the Bearcat defense in a in Saturday’s 34-14 season-opening win at Bluffton. The linebacker recorded five solo tackles, including four for loss and two quarterback sacks, one of which forced a fumble.
The defense surrendered just seven first downs and 174 yards of offense, while tying a program single-game record with six quarterback sacks.
Saint Vincent plays at Geneva College this Saturday.
A JC retirement
HUNTINGTON – After 28 years of running the Strength and Conditioning program at Juniata College, Doug Smith is retiring.
Smith was the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Coach of the Year in 2015, Samson Equipment Division III Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year in 2009, and the Pennsylvania State Director from 2002 to 2006.
A resident of Mifflin County, Smith began coaching at Juniata College in 1990. He joined the football staff as a recruiter, assistant defensive line coach, and strength and conditioning coordinator until 1993. Smith then moved to Lock Haven University as the football assistant coach and strength and conditioning coordinator until 1995.
In 1997, Smith returned to Juniata for good as the full-time Strength and Conditioning coach for the football team.
He has coached 80 All-Americans and 26 Hall of Fame Members. Teams have made 101 tournament and championship appearances under his supervision in the weight room.
