Lilly dominates in playoff opener

Everything that could’ve gone right for Lilly in Game 1 of its Altoona Greater City League semifinal on Monday night did.
Everything that could’ve gone wrong for B&M Construction did, too.
Lilly batted around twice in the first two innings as it crushed B&M, 14-1, to take a 1-0 series lead.
“We tore the cover off the ball today, and we had our top arm on the mound,” Lilly coach Luke McCoy said. “Everything went the way it was planned to go. Fifteen hits in 3¢ innings, you’re not going to do too much better than that.”
Lilly got its outburst going in the first with a two-run double from Brandon Ickes and later, Matt Minor added a two-run single to make it 5-0 right out of the gate as all nine hitters made a plate appearance.
“They do this a lot,” B&M Construction coach Ken Durbin said. “They’re very good at taking advantage of mistakes. They’re very consistent about putting the bat on the ball, and that’s what they did tonight.”
Lilly wasted no time going right back to the plate in the second as Brock Porter and George Roberts added on two-run singles to make it 11-1 as it helped to activate the 10-run rule as Lilly went to the dish 12 times.
“We had a couple of Texas Leaguers thrown in there, but for the most part, we squared up their arms up today, and it was a good start to the series,” McCoy said.
Shane Suter led the way on the mound as he gave up just the one run in the three innings on four hits.
“He goes out there expecting to win every game, and so do we,” McCoy said. “He knows how to pitch with the lead. He’s a seasoned guy and he wasn’t going to let that lead get away.”
Both teams will return for Game 2 tonight at Vets Field at 8 p.m.
