Mountain Lion duo honored

Altoona Area High School track and field senior athletes Aydan Summers and Sarah Graham were recently awarded the Angie Gioiosa Memorial Scholarship and the M. Gordon and Jane White Scholarship, respectively, for 2021.

Summers will attend Lock Haven University in the fall and Graham will attend Dickenson College.

The Angie Gioiosa Memorial Scholarship, established in 2012, honors the memory of Coach Gioiosa who passed away in 2011 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Gioiosa, a retired AAHS social studies teacher, had a love for coaching cross country and track and field for Altoona.

His passion for running was well known throughout the community and his accomplishments were recognized by his induction into the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame. Gioiosa had a commitment to developing young athletes and understood the importance of post-secondary education and the opportunities it afforded.

The M. Gordon and Jane White, established in 2020, honors the memory of White who passed away in 2019. White, who taught physical education for 32 years in the Altoona school district, coached basketball at Logan Junior High School before serving as cross country and track and field coach at Altoona. He led three girls cross country teams to state championships.

The scholarship was established to honor the Whites for their life-long commitment to education, service to others, high ethical and moral character and strong work ethic.
