Tyrone grad receives Landmark honor

HUNTINGDON — Juniata College softball standout, Cate Baran was recently named to the Landmark All-Conference second team as a pitcher.

The freshman, a graduate of Tyrone, started 11 games with 12 total appearances. She pitched eight complete games. Baran worked 64• innings in the circle before the Landmark postseason, posting a 3-9 record with a 3.16 ERA. She led the team with 57 strikeouts and 13 walks.

Talko contributes

Ryne Talko, a Bishop Guilfoyle graduate, recently helped propel Grove City College to the second round of the 2021 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Tournament.

It is the first time the school has advanced since 2012. Grove City defeated Roger Williams College of Rhode Island, 5-0. Talko provided wins at No. 2 doubles with Jameson Sposato, 8-4, and at No. 3 singles over Tyler Cain, 6-3,6-2.

Trio wins at Sylvan Hills

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The team of Gary Zimmerman, Robin Weaver and Dick Barefoot won the Sylvan Hills Golf Club Butch Focht Senior Golf League.

Second place were Dave Biseli, John Roland, Carl Lear and Pat Killer, and third place were Sen Thach, Jim Brown, Ed Wayland and Geech Gutshall.

First half over

CRESSON — The first half of the season has been completed in 2021 Ladies League night action at the Summit Country Club with a nine-way tie for first place in the point standings.

Totaling 10 points are Rita Brouse, Crosby Denis, Lindsey Fox, Lauren Graham, Kim Johnson, Nancy Moore, Chrissy Sears, Lynette Shaffer and Sue Wilson.

There was a three-way tie for first place in a tournament held on May 3 between Sears, Shaffer and Fox; Brouse, Moore and Graham; and Johnson, Denis and Wilson.
