Gillam qualifies at golf event for chance at US Open
WALLACE, N.C. — Tyrone native Jimmy Gillam tied for first-place in local qualifying for the U.S. Open Thursday at River Landing Golf Course in North Carolina. His 5-under par 67 earned one of five qualifying spots (out of a field of 84), allowing him to move on to the final qualifying stage which will take place in two weeks.
Gillam made eight birdies, including on four straight holes two different times, and made bogey on three holes during his round.
Final qualifying is a one-day, 36-hole event. The first of nine U.S.-based final qualifiers kicks off on Monday, May 24, in Texas, while eight are scheduled on Monday, June 7: two in Ohio and one each in California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New York and Washington. Japan (May 24) and Canada (June 7) will also host final qualifiers.
Advancing through the next stage would gain Gillam a spot in this year’s U.S. Open, June 18-21 at Torrey Pines, near San Diego.
